How To Buy A Good Bansuri or Bamboo Flute for beginners : selecting a Best Bansuri
Tips for choosing or buying your first flute or bansuri:
If you are a beginner , buying your first flute could be very difficult task. There are lot of varieties, models, scales available. There are lot of variation in their price also. In this post I am going to provide some tips to help beginners.
Types of flutes or bansuries available.
Mainly two types of bansuri flutes are used in India. One is north Indian bansuri and other is carnatic bansuri. The difference lies in their construction. North Indian flute has 6 holes and one blowing hole. However modern north Indian bansuries may have 7th. These are flutes are longer in length and made of thin bamboo. Carnatic flutes are constructed from thick bamboo and are shorter in length. These have 8 holes. Both are constructed according to north Indian and south Indian music and its style. You may choose any of them according to your style which you want to learn.
Best bansuri flute for beginners.
It is always suggested that beginner should select G Base flute. G Base flute is also called beginners flute. But G flute is very big in size and its very difficult for a beginner to produce sound from it. Moreover it would be difficult to position your fingers on all the holes. According to me one should start with C middle flute. After that upgrade to G base or A base flute. G base flute price is also higher than C middle or A base flute. For learning Indian classical music Base flutes like E base , F Base , D Base are must. As you progress you can add them to your portfolio one by one.
Cheap flutes vs professional flutes or bansuries.
There is lot of variety of bansuries or flutes in the market and online. Someone may easily confuse because there are some flutes which are very cheap and some are very very expensive. I will suggest you to avoid cheap flutes completely. They are not tuned properly. The are also made of low grade bamboo. On the other hand professional flutes or bansuries are a piece of art. It took hours to craft a single flute from bamboo. Each hole is tuned individually. They are a bit costlier but we should invest in good , well tuned professional bansuri.
