Indian Bansuri is a professional musical instruments handcrafted artistically from bamboo. Professional flutes are very expensive . So it's very important to take care of them so that they would last long .
Bamboo is a natural material , very strong and fragile. A Little mishandling develop cracks in the flute. So we should follow some maintenance and care tips so that your instruments would last long.
1. Oral Hygene:
Wash your hands and clean your mouth before playing anything on flute. Otherwise fungus or mold may develop into it. Don't eat in between.
2. Storage:
Always store your Bansuri in a protected case or a flute bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and accidental damage.. Otherwise it may break accidentally. Never keep it on floor otherwise you may lose it instantly. Keep it in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
3. Threading the Bansuri
Always thread your Bansuri at the both ends. Threaded bansuri looks beautiful and adds strength to it. Threading also ensure that the flute will maintain its shape in future.
4. Oil your Bansuri
In dry climate you may prefer to oil your bansuri some flutest regularly oil their bansuries and some wont. Everyone has their own views. Oiling may increase the life of the flute. It adds strength to dry bamboo.If you decide to oil ,some points should be taken into consideration:
For oiling, use any vegetable oil like mustard oil, almond oil or sesame oil. Please don't oil just after playing. First clean the moisture and let it dry completely. Take few drops of oil on the Cotton and with the help of a long stick, apply oil on the fruit from inside. Make sure the flute is clean dry and there is no dust inside. Don't apply oil to cork otherwise it may loosen it. Oil your flute every 3 months or so to keep it in good condition
5. Don't Touch the cork
While cleaning avoid touching the cork. It may affect the tuning of the flute. A slight change in its position may affect it seriously.
6. Avoid temperature swings
Don't play your Bansuri in the extreme cold weather. Bring your fluit to the room temperature before using it. Otherwise with warm air Bamboo may expand and develop cracks. Sudden temperature swings should be avoided.
Lastly, flute or bansuri is an ancient, divine instrument. So it requires lot of respect and care from your side. It is a hollow bamboo and it cannot make sound on its own but when you work on it learn it and practice , it can create magic.
Fixing Cracks in flute or bansuri
No matter how much you care of your flute, bamboo can easily develop cracks. Its very frustrating situation. However you may fix it easily. To fix any crack , dry it completely. Take some superglue and pour into crack. Now hold it tight for some time. Now thread it properly on that spot. Instead of threading you can also use Duct tape. Periodically inspect your bansuri regularly for any further cracks, splits, or damage.
