PVC Flute Making At Home - A DIY Project

Hello friends, If you are a flute lover and want to learn this instrument, you must have a good and well tuned flute or bansuri. You can get it easily from local market or from online E-Commerce Websites. However a professional flute is very expensive. If you are unable to find any flute within your budget, you can make it easily from PVC pipe. Making  homemade flute in DIY project is easy. Here is the detailed information about this in simple steps.

PVC Flute Measurements Chart:

There are many pvc measurements charts you can find online, but believe me, if you follow them you may end up with a flute which is not in tune. Even if one hole is out of tune ,the flute is useless. All the efforts and materials would be wasted. So please follow the steps carefully.

Requirements For Making PVC Flute :

In this Project we will discuss about making A Base flute or Bansuri from PVC Pipe. You will need the following materials:

  1. PVC Conduit Pipe
  2. Cork or Plug
  3. Drill Bit
  4. Ruler and Pencil
  5. Hacksaw blade
  6. Threads For tying
  7. Any Glue for cork fixing
  8. Sharp Tip Knife
  9. Gstrings App for Tuning
  10. Fine Sand Paper

Pvc pipe required for this purpose should have 1 inch outer Diameter and 2 mm Thickness. It depends on pipe maker and may differ slightly . Inner diameter should be between 20 mm to 22 mm. Plastic quality should be excellent. It is commonly used in electric fittings.
Cork or plug can be made from thick thermocol foam or from old flip flop rubber. You can also use wine cork for this purpose
Drill bits should be of  9 mm ,10 mm size.

Construction of PVC Flute:

First Part :

Cut 21.5 inch (or 55 cm app.) long piece from PVC length. Make both ends smooth with sand paper. Mark a spot from left end at about 7.5 Centimeters . Use 10 mm  drill bit and make clean hole. With sharp tip of knife widen it a little bit. This would be your Blowing Hole. Please note that holes should be clean and round. Don't use screwdriver or any thing hot for drilling. Only drill bits can make clean holes.

Second Part :

Now Fix a cork with glue. Push it from left side up to the hole you just made. Now Blow it and test the sound and blowing comfort. If you are able to produce clean sound then proceed to next step. Otherwise use sand paper or knife and alter it as required.

Now download Gstrings app in your mobile from play store run it. Now blow in flute in front of mobile and  check the note frequency. It should be E Note. It should be flat at that time . Now cut pipe from right end a little bit at a time. Check again. Repeat the process until you get correct E Note.

Now from right end ( Opp end from blowing hole) Mark a point at about 5.6 cm and make a hole with 9mm  dril bit. Check sound with app , the note should be F# . Use knife or sand paper and make necessary adjustments. Repeat the process until  you get F# note.

Mark 2nd hole at about 10.5 cm  from right end and drill 10 mm hole. Make adjustments and get G# Note. Now mark 3rd hole at about 13 cm  from right side . Repeat the process to get A Note.

Third Part :

Now its time to mark next three holes the process is same. Mark the fourth hole at about 17.5 centimetre from right side and use  9 mm drill bit to make the hole. This will give you  B Note . Mark Nest hole 21 cm from right side and this will give you C# Note. The last or 6th hole would be at 24.5 cm from right side and this is D# Note.

The final Distance of all holes from Right to Left:

Final Length of pipe =21 to 21.5 Inch, Hole distance from Right side to left  : 5.6 ,10.5 ,13cm , 17.5 cm , 21 cm , 24.5 cm. Blowing hole distance from left side is 7.5 cm

Fourth Part :

Now you are almost done. Check again the sound of each hole and make fine adjustments with sand paper. Now polish hole pipe with sandpaper to remove any marking and labels. Finish it with some threading or color tape to make it beautiful. Please see the above  picture on the top. That is the final Result of A Base Flute.
